Rood

While studying Animation & VFX at the Utrecht school for the arts, my friend and roommate Jasper ten Hoor was working on an short adaptation of the fairytale “Red riding hood”.

We decided to help him our with a monstrous CGI wolf, having a real life use case for our papers we were working on at that time.

Client: Jasper ten Hoor / HKU

Role: 3D Generalist / Hair and Fur artist

Year: 2012- 2013

Statistics: Three completed CGI shots and a great use case

Fur simulation

To create a realistic wolf-like creature, we needed dynamic fur.
I myself got tasked with doing R&D about depicting realistic fur, using on the shelf tooling the industry provided.

After an intense research period, we figured out a manageable pipeline and created all envisioned shots on time.

Highjacking the schools network to meet the deadline

After we build our pipeline and got to work, we soon realised we were not going to be able to finish on time with the compute made available to us.

As a last resort we decided to secretly roll out a render farm over the university’s network, managing to increase our render and simulation speed by *10 and get the shots done on time.

A great learning experience

With all the challenges this project brought us, we grew a lot as 3D artists and as a production team.
